Many of us dream of the day our boss will say “you can work from home on this one“.
But is it all it’s cracked up to be?
Depending on the job you have, you may or may not be able to work from home. My experiences of working from home have led to very different feelings about my autonomy, motivation and productivity.
Read on to find out how my two contrasting experiences played out.
Scenario 1: Working from home as a teacher
Some of you may know that I work part-time as a teacher. Teaching has been in my blood for many years and I’ve run my own performing arts school, which I love.
However, in the last few years, I had a job as a 3-day a week school teacher in a secondary school teaching pupils aged 11 – 18 drama and film studies. Whilst I loved the teaching aspect of the job, as the end of term approached, I discovered I needed to have marked and graded all my students’ books, so that end of term reports could be written.
The problem is that before you can mark something, you have to have taught the students something. So inevitably, most of the marking tended to pile up towards the end of term after their assessments.
In short, I found myself one weekend having to mark all the books in the picture below which turned out to be over 100 books, all of which needed detailed marking and feedback. There was no time to do this at school as I was teaching lessons so the only way to do it was to work from home.
Now I found this no mean feat I can tell you and when I had to sit down on Friday night, continue on Saturday and then into Sunday, whilst my children were begging me to take them out to the park, my feelings were not those of ‘oh great, I get to work from home this weekend” – far from it.
I felt overwhelmed, overworked and resented every minute that spent marking the books.
And as I worked through the books, one at a time, I found myself asking one question:
“What in heaven’s name am I doing?”
and then I found myself asserting the same answer:
“There ‘s got to something better than this!”
I loved teaching and I wanted my pupils to do well, so I did my marking diligently and conscientiously to,o but that’s just who I am and I got through it.
But I hated it!
It was not the freedom lifestyle that I envisioned ‘working from home’ to be.
Contrast this with my experience of setting up my own online business and my feelings could not have been more different.
Scenario 2: Working from home with Wealthy Affiliate
Shortly before my marking experience, I discovered a wonderful community of online entrepreneurs called Wealthy Affiliate.
I can honestly say that it has transformed my life and my future options beyond measure.
Wealthy Affiliate is many things, and if you want to know more information, please read my full review here but suffice to say now, that it is a training company that ‘holds your hand’ and teaches you how to create your own online business for free, that you can do from home in your own time.
Working from home has become the joy that I knew it could be. I can get up at times that are suitable to my lifestyle and personal situation, I can take my children to school and set my work hours around them.
I find that I now feel invigorated getting up in the morning and I can’t wait to get to my computer to write another post or research something interesting that I can write an article about.

Free training – no experience needed
When I started working from home, I had no experience of being a blogger. I had worked in some multimedia companies creating websites for clients but that had always been with the help of programmers and designers. I now found myself creating my own sites by myself.
There was no mystery however – the training I received was clear and easy-to-follow and the mix of online content, videos, webinars and 24/7 help meant that if I ever had questions, they were always answered in a timely manner.
And speaking of that, the overwhelming positive response I got from other members was just incredible.
You are not alone – there’s always someone there
One of the downsides of working from home in other businesses is that you can feel isolated and alone, which can lead to a lack of motivation and poor productivity. There can be distractions a plenty at home so you need to have a lot of self-discipline in order to overcome procrastination and inactivity.
This is where the Wealthy Affiliate community are so wonderful. I never feel alone and I have made friends from all over the world who are supporting me (as I am supporting and encouraging them) in our quest to find a better way of working for the 21st century.
So here are just a few reasons why I love working from home the Wealthy Affiliate way and why I think you will love it too.
Wealthy Affiliate will:
- give you the chance to earn money online doing something you love
- lead you in a step-by-step proven process (many people eventually quit their day job
- give you more time to spend with your family
- allow you to work in a flexible way – you’ll be able to go to your child’s sports day at last
- give you the best training in affiliate marketing there is allowing you to set up a legitimate home-based business
- give you a way-out so you really can ultimately fulfill your dreams
- let you work in your own time, to your own deadlines
- enable you to interact with many other like-minded entrepreneurs
- give you 24/7, 365 days a year support, help and advice
- teach you transferable webmaster skills which you can transfer back to the traditional jobs market if you want
- teach you how to start your own business for free (there is a modest upgrade fee if you like it and want to further your training)
- facilitate the creation and hosting of at least 2 websites (but can be up to 50 if you upgrade to premium membership)
- put you back in charge of your own destiny!
When I look at all the benefits of working from home the Wealthy Affiliate way, the only question I asked was:
Why didn’t I do this sooner?
So if you are struggling with your own working from home nightmares and are looking for a better alternative, look no further than Wealthy Affiliate.
It may not be for everyone, but if you want more autonomy and control of your life and you want to reignite the passion in your working life, there is no better way I have found.
I love teaching and I will continue to do so part-time for a while yet, but I’m excited because I also know that I am building a sustainable business for my future where I can leave the ‘apples’ behind and expect the feast instead.

Your welcome. Thanks for reading and leaving your thoughts. Have a great day. Gail
Hey, just wanted to say that this is a very nice article! Very well put together and written! I can relate with the fact that some work for home jobs are not for me as well! I love working from home now because I LOVE what I do… Thank you very much for the article. Hope to read more soon!
Hi Nicholas. Thanks for reading and commenting. I’m so glad that you have found your own way of working from home and that you enjoy it. The difference comes with having the control over your own life I think. If you are working from home but having to dance to someone else’s tune, then that’s no good. The ideal is being able to set your own agenda and go from there. It’s so much more motivating too. All the best. Gail
I am so happy that you have been able to balance your life and that you are aiming for what’s important to you. I too, have been pretty much walking the same road and I think that Wealthy Affiliate is an excellent choice to learn and develop a different way of working that is parallel to the life that one wants to actually live. The amount of information available on this platform is really incredible and as you mention, there is always someone near to help you in problematic moments. Affiliate marketing may be something that one can accomplish on her/his own but WA gives one that push and inspiration when needed. Thank you for sharing this. I am more than positive that there are a whole lot of people who in this very moment, are trying to put their lives in the order they would like to have it. We all have the right to control our paths!
Hello Ioannis. Thanks for your detailed comment. I’m glad that you have found Wealthy Affiliate too. It’s such a great training and sets you up for life. I’m seriously considering recommending my children study it full time instead of going to university. Who wants to come out of college with £50k+ debts and no guarantee of a job when you could be earning serious income after 3 years at WA. The world is changing and we really need to adapt to survive in this changing world.
I agree that we should all be forging our own paths too. You might like some of the articles on my other niche site at https://howtocreateyourownlife.com/ which is all about creating the life you want.
Great article. I love this line “I can leave the ‘apples’ behind and expect the feast instead.” because that’s what having an online business really does for you. It may take time to build but it’s worth it.
Wealthy Affiliate is an awesome starting ground for anyone who wants to start an online business. For anyone reading this, I suggest you check the links given in this article.
Hi Nathan. Thank you for your comments. I’m glad you liked the article and I’m definitely looking forward to the feast. I agree that is affiliate marketing does take time to establish, but what business doesn’t? And it’s a lot of fun in the meantime. I know many people who stuck with the program that Wealthy Affiliate offer and are now making a full time income after 18 months to 2 years. And the great thing is that they can do that forever. All the best for your success too. Thanks. Gail
Working from home is great! Working from home, while doing what you love with the flexibility of time freedom is even better!
I think it’s all a matter of what kind of work actually floats your boat, but we’ve really come so far forward with the help of technology so that we can work from anywhere now, be it teaching or affiliate marketing. Glad that you’ve found something enjoyable for you!
Hi Sherise. Thanks for reading and leaving a comment. I definitely love it when I work from home and agree that technology has moved on but much of the working world has not and many businesses still prefer all their employees on site – I guess that’s so they can keep an eye on them! 🙂
Still, that doesn’t apply to us so woo hoo! 🙂
