What is Wealthy Affiliate about: a scam or what?
This is the question I asked myself a while back when I was looking to start a legitimate online business. I am cautious of get-rich-quick schemes and monthly programs where you have to pay lots up front, or there’s a carrot and then another one, then another – all of which come at an additional cost. Or those training programs where you have to wait months and spend lots of money to get the information you really need to succeed. You are most probably in that boat too if you are reading this post. Something has caught your eye and you are wary of whether it is legitimate, a scam or what then read on and I will give you my honest opinion about Wealthy Affiliate and it’s appropriateness or not for an online business startup in 2018.
I will state my opinion clearly up front – I don’t believe Wealthy Affiliates is a scam. And I will tell you why. I used their knowledge, training and expertise to set up this and other websites I own and their help has been invaluable. However, this is really only my opinion and you are indeed free, in fact actively encouraged, to make up your own mind.

So what is Wealthy Affiliate and what is the Wealthy Affiliate scam?
Basically there is no scam! Wealthy Affiliate is just a way to help you create a legitimate online business using affiliate marketing and blogging. Affiliate marketing is a way of helping businesses attract customers, and blogging is writing interesting content for websites on a topic that interests you.
It’s a simple concept. And before you ask, yes, you can definitely learn all about it via the internet and YouTube for free, I’m certain. You just need the time it takes you to do the research and the wisdom to sort through the good from the bad content.
Basically, affiliate marketing works like this.
- You create a website in a niche area that you are interested in (e.g. baby clothes for premature babies, or branded T-shirts – you choose what interests you).
- You write some interesting content on your site and hopefully people will read it and find it useful.
- You attract visitors to your site by making use of keywords, advertising and search engine optimisation
- You add some relevant links to your site to tell your visitors about different things that they may be interested in.
- If your visitors click on the links, they are taken to the merchant’s site and if they then buy something from them, then you get a commission from the merchant for helping drive people to their site.
That’s it! Not rocket science; just another business model.
Now some people may think that affiliate marketing ‘per se’ is a scam. And obviously they are entitled to their own opinion; it is just not one that I share. If you break down what affiliate marketing is, it is nothing more than earning a commission for recommending something to others or for pointing them in the direction of a deal. But isn’t that what your insurance broker does when you phone up and ask for a car insurance quote? They will give you several options, and you are free to make your own decision. Or what about those voucher sites that we all love? Do you think they don’t get a commission?
Or what about a friend who recommends their gym club/karate club/dance club to you because they are running a promotion that month? They might get a free lesson if they recommend some new people and you get to hear about the new club. No one forces you to go along, and usually there is no obligation, but it’s a good ‘word of mouth’ marketing system.
It’s just marketing – and it’s been happening forever! Affiliate marketing is just the way the Internet does it – because instead of talking over the garden fence, Internet marketers use banners, adverts and links.
Commission is not a dirty word – in my opinion. You may have other opinions, but as a business owner, I like it. I offer incentives to my customers if they can bring in some more business. It’s not underhand, it’s not a scam – it’s just a way of reaching a new audience of people and places that I maybe cannot.
So why does affiliate marketing sometimes get a bad press?
A few years ago, I looked into affiliate marketing which promised to create amazing wealth by basically sending lots of identical articles to different sites, in the hope that some of them would produce some income – needless to say, it didn’t.
However I did believe that affiliate marketing was a legitimate online business and I have always wanted to be a writer, so I was thinking that there must be something to this, but what? Where could I start and who could help me?
At this point, I did some research and found Wealthy Affiliates. And yes, I did the “Is Wealthy Affiliates a scam?” Google search!
What I found was a lot of reviews online, with lots of information including walk-through tours of their training and approach, details of how it works, the costs and testimonials. And I took the plunge and went through to join their free program and later the monthly Premium program. I joined and was very excited about what I found. I found a one-stop-shop for starting an Internet marketing business with an amazing community of online entrepreneurs more than willing to share their knowledge. Thank you to them if they are reading this.
Is it free to join?
Yes and no – there is a free program which will give you more than enough information to get started on a website and business. You also get access to the community of other people who’ve been there and done that. And that costs nothing. You can ask as many questions as you want and there are always people willing to help. There is also a premium programme (of course there is) – there’s a meal deal at MacDonald’s isn’t there? If you pay a bit more, you get a bit more! The premium membership costs $19 for the first month and $49 thereafter for as long as you want to be a member. But there’s not obligation. Of course there are incentives and adverts but I think you are living in a dream world if you expect there not to be. Anyone who watches TV regularly will know how advertising works.
What’s the catch?
So far, I have not found one. I have just been bowled over by the positive energy and commitment everyone has online for making the Internet a place for business. Kyle and Carson (the owner’s) are real people and they promote their business for real people too; which is why I like it.
Reasons you won’t like Wealthy Affiliates
To be honest, I had to rack my brain a bit here however, I realise that not everyone has similar values, beliefs and opinions to me, so I’ve made a list of reasons why I think people might not like it.
- If you want a get-rich-quick scheme
- If you don’t want to have to do any work for your business to be successful
- If you are not prepared to give back or help others
- If you think that everyone’s hard-earned knowledge should be available free of charge without having to pay anything ever (however small) – ie. If you think you should get something for nothing forever
- If you want to promote things unscrupulously whether you personally believe in the products or not
However, I think you will like Wealthy Affiliates if you:
- Genuinely want a legitimate online business that you can run at your own pace
- Are willing to put in the work (you would expect to have to do some work starting any other business, right?)
- Are passionate about a subject or topics that you want to tell others about (and these can be anything at all?)
- Are willing to learn
- Realise this will take time and effort but the rewards are related to what you put in
But don’t just take my word for it. Have a look at the Wealthy Affiliates site and see for yourself.
Below is a list of things you get on the free and premium programs so you can compare the two.
In fact, they have just updated thins so you also get free access to the Jaaxy tool for researching keywords too which is even better.
Will I get some money for referring you?
If you click through from a link in this blog, and then join up, then yes, I will receive a small commission. There I said it – the commission word! But then again, I researched the company, I’ve joined, I’ve done my homework and I’ve spent time writing this blog to try to dispel a few myths. If you are interested and would still like to know more about Wealthy Affiliates, then click through here to find out more for yourself.
If you still believe that affiliate marketing is a scam, then Wealthy Affiliates is probably not the place for you and I wish you the best of luck in your search. Have a great day. Success is what we make it. I truly believe that and thank you for reading.

3 Steps to creating an online business
A little bit about me
I am a part-time teacher living in the UK. I teach performing arts and I love it, and even with an online business, I will continue to teach because it is part of who I am. But that’s the benefit of doing business online: I get the time to work at my own pace in my own way. I’ve built a website through WA that I love to write for at www.howtocreateyourownlife.com which I’m very proud of. I have 2 wonderful children who are my world and to be honest, I’m doing most of this for them – so that I can give them the opportunities that I didn’t always have.
I want them to have the freedom to live their lives without being worried about finding the money for day-to-day living. And I want them to have the time to pursue their dreams. That doesn’t mean I’m going to be handing it to them all on a plate one day – but I will definitely be showing them how to start their own business so they can benefit from the changes we are experiencing and will be best prepared to succeed.
All the best. Gail.
Thank you. This post reaffirms my belief in Wealthy Affiliate and I will continue to work making myself the success that Wealthy Affiliate allows.
Ih Latricia. Thank you for reading and leaving a comment. Success is never guaranteed but to climb a mountain you just have to go one step at a time, and one day, your step will take you to the top. All the best to you. Gail
Great post. You hit the nail on the head with this article. I fully agree with you that Wealthy Affiliate is not a scam. But like anything in life, it takes some work. You have to be willing to get your hands a little dirty to be successful. Nicely done.
Thank you for reading and leaving a comment Eddie. I know that the online business is not all that others might hype it up to be, but I do believe it is viable, honest and the future. With many jobs now being threatened by artificial intelligence and computers, it’s time to take a long hard look at how we do business and make some changes – like the industrial revolution – you have to move with the times! Have a great day. Gail
I heard that Wealthy Affiliate has a hosting platform. I actually have lots of problems with my current hosting provider. Do you have any experiences with hosting of Wealthy Affiliate?
Hi there. Yes, I have a few sites now hosted by Wealthy Affiliate. They basically use the WordPress platform as their backbone under the brand of siteRubix but you can also import your own website domains to them or start new ones. If you join as a free member then you can have 2 free domains under their siteRubix platform. A premium member gets 50 domains under siteRubix and it only costs a few dollars to buy your own custom domain too. I’ve found it all to be very stable and the help and training that is available is second to none, really. I have another site with 123-reg and have had problems getting help and support sometimes but there is a whole community of people at WA who can help if you get stuck. Thanks for your question. All the best, Gail
I had no idea how to start in affiliate marketing up until about 6 months ago but I always read how you can make money as an affiliate. My curiosity and desire to earn some additional cash online has led me to search for various courses, reviews and videos on how exactly does affiliate marketing work.
After enrolling in free courses and watching lots of videos, I still couldn’t figure out how. Until I came across Wealthy Affiliate and because of the courses and lessons, I now have 2 websites up and running.
Wealthy affiliate is not a scam, it’s the best online training platform there is out there.
Thank you for writing a great review of Wealthy Affiliate. I hope more people who want to be successful online will read this and join us in the community.
Thanks Alice. My experience is the same as yours. Very happy to have my sites up and running and proud to be associated with this group of people.
Great post, Gail!
You made many true and valid points. Yes, Wealthy Affiliate is a legitimate way to make money online. It is an excellent program for anyone who wants to start an online business, too.
I love your section about reasons why someone will like or dislike Wealthy Affiliate. Yes! It is not a get rich quick scheme. As in it is not for those who expect to get returns in a short time.
But for those who wants to have a long time business, a business that will truly last and continue to make money for a long time, this is a very good platform to use and get on.
Hi and thanks for leaving a comment. I’m definitely in it for a long-term business. You have to put something in to get something out, after all.
Hi Gail, What a great gathering of information! I found one company that wanted $10,000 to teach how to make your own website, etc. Crazy! Wealthy Affiliate is the best!
Thanks,
Diane
Thanks Diane – there are certainly a lot of scams out there but I’m sure that Wealthy Affiliates is not one of them.
Hi Gail, I really like your honesty in this review. I also like how you gave your personal experience of Wealthy Affiliate, as well as your thoughts on Affiliate Marketing as a business model.
I agree, Affiliate Marketing is a legitimate business, it just unfortunate that a few “gurus” have scammed people with this model, which has given it a bad press.
Thankfully Wealthy Affiliate is an honest platform for anyone really wanting to earn with Affiliate Marketing.
Thanks for sharing your review.
Thanks for your comment Stephanie. I always think that honesty is really the best policy. Have a great day. Gail
You definitely tell it like it is in describing Wealthy Affiliate. Even though it is one of many, it stands out with the benefits you outline.
Thanks Tanya. I agree – it’s always ‘horses for course’ and people are always free to make their own decisions. I’m very happy with mine.
I firmly believe that Wealthy Affiliate is the best platform available for Affiliate Marketers or anyone looking to build and run a successful website. When I first landed on a Wealthy Affiliate review I was just about to give up on my dream and I’m very grateful that I did not.
I had just been sent down an awful sales funnel on a competitors website that asked for $149 purchase to in order to get everything I would need to be an online success.
I just couldn’t do it. I stuck with the $20 membership only to find that the platform was straight crap.
Lucky for me I found my home with Wealthy Affiliate and have been here for over 6 months now. I have made leaps and bounds and I could not be more happy with the level of training that I have received and all my success.
Sorry you had those bad experiences but so glad you found Wealthy Affiliate to make up for it. Sounds like you’ve been busy building your business too. Congratulations.
I love the way you present the information here and showed us how you got involved and checked it out. I too have been concerned about on-line marketing scams so it’s great to here a believable review and personal take on a program. Thank you.
Hi Rick. There a lot of online scams out there and I have fallen for some of them but Wealthy Affiliate is not one of them. I’m glad you like the personal take, which I feel is always the best way to write anyway and I can honestly say it is all true. I hope you find out for yourself though and see the benefits first hand. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. Have a great day. Gail
Hi, thank you so much for giving an absolute insight about wealthy affiliate. I really had a lot of doubts about it. But I am sure you cleared them. This is amazing!!
Thanks for your comment Rick. I can absolutely, hand-on-heart recommend Wealthy Affiliate without hesitation because I use it, have experience of it, and am extremely pleased with what it has taught me and allowed me to create. The great thing is that you can try it free and see for yourself too. Thanks again. Gail
Hello. I am interested in making money online. I realize that it is not easy and I intend to approach it as a traditional company. I’ve been learning affiliate marketing for a short time, but I have not heard of Wealthy Affiliate yet. I seem to be the platform I was looking for. I will try to register there as soon as possible and be successful on the internet. Thanks for this review.
Hi Michael. Thank you for your comment and for reading the article. I think you will find that Wealthy Affiliate is an excellent company for launching an internet business. In my humble opinion, it does not over-sell its services or hype up the money that you can make. Primarily it is a training company and as such, unless you are willing to do the work, nothing will change. What I really like in particular at WA however, is that there is an enormous community of like-minded people who are willing to help you. No question is too simple to ask and there is such a wealth of experience at WA it’s truly mindblowing. If you want a place where you can learn, grow and succeed from nothing, then it really is the right place for you. I’ll look out for your in the community there.
All the best. Gail
Hi Gail,
Ive been looking at Wealthy Affiliate as a way of helping me boost sales in the MLM I’m with. I’ve been through the free training for another company and then I found out how much it was going to cost to purchase their licence for the best results. It does everything for you in way of set up which is very valuable of course but, I’m feeling that the end game is to market their marketing formula. It is quite expensive too which, right now, I’m not really able to do up front. My question to you is does this program work for someone like me? I’m looking to drive people to my products (not friends and family) in the best way possible.
Hi Sydney. Thank you for reading the article and for your questions which I’m happy to answer. In my experience too, there are many other programs out there that are really just promoting their marketing ideas, as you said. I think Wealthy Affiliate will be great for you if you want to drive people to your own niche website. I also have a niche site which is nothing to do with affiliate marketing, but is on the law of attraction. You can check it out at: https://howtocreateyourownlife.com/ if you want to. What I love about WA is that you can go through their training and they actively encourage you to set up your own niche site in whatever area of life interests you. I have services and products that I am working on through that site and the training absolutely covers that. In addition, the community of other WA members can help you with virtually anything you want. There are people working in so many different niches, it would take all day to list them. And they constantly post new information, training and advice on how to approach new subjects, relevant marketing strategies and just keeping positive. Wealthy Affiliate does have a bootcamp course as well if you want to promote their training program, but first and foremost, they recommend the general niche site approach. Hope this answers your question, but please come back to me if you need further help or have any other queries. Here’s to your success. Gail
I have definitely read the secret by Rhonda Byrne and I to try to thinking and living life by that bugs out that that says a lot as far as my way of thinking I guess in the way that you run as I am it does make a difference. That’s why I’ve cut out all the negativity and negative people out of my life because all it does is flowing into your day air how you feel. And the fact that she teaches you how to already own it and know that you’ve got it opposed to doubting it does make a difference.
Hi Maria. Cutting out negative people is advisable in whatever walk of life you are in. They simple drain your energy and you need to be able to stay positive in order to flourish. That is not to say that we will not be there to help if they need you, but just choose not to get dragged into their negativity too. Have a wonderful day and thank you for your comments. Gail
I am also a writer and in the creative field. I hope we can keep in touch & chat about writing. I would like som input on writing content formy website. I want to make it engaging & attract customers.
Hi Dionne. Thank you for reading my article and commenting. I love the creative field as I have spent many years of my life in that area with performing arts, films, dance and drama. I’d love to stay in touch and am very happy to help in whatever way I can.
I wanted to leave a comment here. I have joined Wealthy Affiliate and I am learning a lot. I am pleased to say that on a few days I will become a premium member and I cannot wait! I am disabled and cannot get out and get a regular job and I’m on a very tight budget. I’ve been looking for a way to supplement my income and I feel this is the perfect way. Back in 2000 i went to school for computer programming so this is right up my alley.
The people at Wealthy Affiliate are very nice and extremely helpful, even though I’m currently on the free stage of the program. That doesn’t seem to matter to them. Which matters to me. Thank you for giving me the chance to make money and prove myself, Wealthy Affiliate!
Dody Kent
Hi Dody. Thank you for reading and leaving a comment. I’m so glad that you have found out for yourself that Wealthy Affiliate is a legitimate way to create an income from an online business. There really is no substitute for experience. Once you become a premium member, there will be such a lot to learn that it will keep you busy on your business for months. Things are always being updated so it’s always fresh too. I wish you well with your business and will look out for you on the platform and help you wherever I can. If you want to see where it can lead, have a look at my post https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/gaillowe/blog/are-you-addicted-to-wealthy-affiliate. It’s good for a giggle too! All the best with your site. Gail
